  • Spend a fabulous afternoon with artist Marilyn Smulders
  • demystify the tumbling block
  • enjoy a 25% off kaffe Fassett shopping party!

Tumbling Blocks is one of the most recognizable quilt patterns – as interesting to our modern sensibilities as it was 200 years ago. When well executed, the pattern has an Escher-like quality, with blocks tumbling one over the other down the quilt top.

The quilt can be intimidating to make. And that’s because of the dreaded “Y” seam, which is hard to sew without puckers.

Marilyn will demonstate an easy method to cut and sew this traditional pattern, avoiding the Y seamaltogether. It’s all in the planning.

We’ll also explore colour and value — the real trick to achieving the pattern’s cool 3D effect. A variety of prints can be used to construct this pattern; Marilyn used 27 Kaffe Fassett prints for the quilt on display. But the pattern also packs a graphic punch using only three fabrics: a light, a medium, and a dark.

At the end of the class, you will be ready to embark on creating your own Tumbling Block, as individual as you are!

Marilyn Smulders enjoys sewing, hand quilting, and listening to audiobooks – and sometimes all at the same time. A resident of Mahone Bay for little more than a year, Marilyn feels so lucky to have her own studio to muck about in, as opposed to using the dining room table and having to tidy up before supper. An exhibition of her work, Quiltessential, is on display to May 9th at the Lunenburg School of the Arts.
