BASIC SMOCKING Saturdays November 14th, 21st, and 28th, 3pm-5pm
Learn the basics of this traditional sewing skill. Over the course of three weeks, you will gain an understanding of the best fabrics to use, how the hand pleat your fabric for smocking and the numerous basic stitches used to make beautiful patterns. Your end product will be a sampler, approximately 10 X 20 cm, which includes may of these stitches in a combination of your choice.
Classes will take place November 14th, 21st and 28th, from 3 – 5pm at Heidi Wulfraat’s studio, 92 Keddy Bridge Rd, Mahone Bay.
November 14th: At this class, you can either bring your fabric or choose a piece from Heidi’s large selection. We will talk about the best type of fabric designs to showcase your handwork, then learn how to mark the fabric for pleating. You will then have a week to “pick up the dots”, resulting in a tightly pleated piece of fabric, ready for smocking.
November 21st: Returning to class with your fabric pleated, you will learn how to tie off your pleating threads, block the sample, then learn a few of the basic smocking stitches. We will discuss colour choices for smocking and the advantages of different combinations of colours based on your fabric. Your homework will be to work on the basic stitches and return with examples, questions, ideas.
November 28th: In the final class, we will join together to work on more of the stitches. While the basic stitches stay more or less the same, the combination of them is what often makes the dramatic patterns. There are a few more advanced stitches which will also be learned in this class, as well as how to finish the edges.
I’m excited to see what fabrics and colours people choose for their project.
As an FYI, smocking is VERY easy to pick out or undo. Do not be afraid to start with a colour or stitch, only to decide later that you are not happy with it. You can always pick it out.
- While it can look very impressive, basic smocking is not that difficult. Do not be intimidated. You can make beautiful patterns after mastering just a few simple stitches.
