FIRST SOCKS Saturdays March 13th and 20th, April 3rd and 17th 2027, 10am - 1pm (in person event)
This is a hybrid class/KAL series to guide a knitter through their first pair of socks. (Spoiler: If you can knit a tube, then you can knit socks.) We will be knitting the Rye DK socks by Tin Can Knits. This pattern is for traditional top-down socks. We will start at the cuff with a variation on the long-tail cast-on, then work through the leg, a heel flap & heel turn, gusset pick-up & decreases, a foot, and end at the toe, where we’ll learn to graft.
Skills Required: Knitters interested in this class must be comfortable with the basics, including long-tail cast-on, knit & purl, and K2tog & SSK decreases. In addition, all participants must know how to knit a small circumference (i.e. a tube) in the round.
Student Brings: A copy of the pattern (see note below), 2.75mm & 3.25mm needles (see note below), and one (1) skein of DK weight/6ply sock yarn (purchased from WoolWorks – see note below). Also removable stitch markers, a darning needle, scissors, and a pen/pencil for taking notes.
This pattern can be downloaded for free from:
Ravelry (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rye-dk)
Tin Can Knits website (https://tincanknits.com/pattern/barley-worsted?g=2)
(Note from Danielle: There is a typo in the pattern. The yarn listed in the pattern is a fingering-weight sock yarn that is used for the “Rye Light” version of these socks. That version is also a free pattern.)
You can knit these socks with traditional DPNs, flexible DPNs, two short circulars, or magic loop. Please bring the needles that you are comfortable with (i.e. if you usually use traditional DPNs, then bring those). Learning to knit socks while also using an unfamiliar needle configuration will complicate things unnecessarily. (Note from Danielle: The pattern has you start with 2.75mm needles for the cuff and switch to 3.25mm needles for the rest of the sock. In my experience, 3.25mm is too large with this yarn weight. You can probably knit the entire sock on 2.75mm unless you are a very tight knitter.)
10am – 1pm for four sessions:
March 13, 2027: cuff & leg
March 20, 2027: heel, gusset, and foot
April 3, 2027: toe
April 17, 2027: second sock check-in
